Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police released surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a child.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
